Cauvery water management body upholds order for Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu
The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) upheld a recommendation directing Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, a move expected to support Kuruvai cultivation and drinking water needs.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on Tuesday upheld the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee's (CWRC) recommendation directing Karnataka to ensure a flow of 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. The decision was taken at the CWMA's 56th meeting held in Delhi under the chairmanship of SK Haldar. Officials from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala participated in the meeting. Tamil Nadu was represented by Prashant M Wadnere, Secretary of the Water Resources Department, and Subramanian, Chairman of the Cauvery Technical Cell. The meeting was held after the Supreme Court on Monday directed the Tamil Nadu government to raise its grievance over the release of its proportionate share of Cauvery water before the CWMA. The water release is expected to benefit Kuruvai cultivation and meet Tamil Nadu's drinking water requirements.
