The Central government has proposed a complete ban on Carbosulfan, an insecticide widely used in India on paddy, cotton and horticultural crops. The proposal, contained in a draft order issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, seeks to prohibit the import, manufacture, sale, transport, distribution and use of the insecticide across the country.

The government cited concerns over the insecticide's toxicity and potential adverse effects on human health and the environment as the reason for the proposed ban. According to the official Gazette notification, an expert committee was constituted in January to examine whether the continued use of Carbosulfan should be permitted, completely banned, or subjected to stricter regulation. The committee submitted its report in June, following which the matter has been proceeded with.
