The Union government told the Supreme Court it cannot give grace marks to Class 12 students who reported discrepancies in CBSE's On-Screen Marking (OSM) of answer sheets. Over 1.68 lakh students had applied for re-evaluation during a one-week window.

The Union government on Friday told the Supreme Court that giving grace marks to students who raised discrepancies in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) On-Screen Marking (OSM) of Class 12 answer sheets in 2026 is not possible. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, said a one-week re-evaluation window had been opened and 1.68 lakh students applied for changes in their marks. “Now, they (petitioners) are asking for grace marks, that is not possible,” Mehta said on behalf of the Centre. Advocate Laxmikant Matadan Shukla, representing petitioner Rakesh Binjola, said students who suffered due to faulty OSM evaluation have cleared other entrance exams but remain stuck.
