The Union government told the Supreme Court it is reconsidering UGC regulations aimed at preventing caste-based discrimination in higher education. The court adjourned pleas challenging the 2026 regulations by four weeks.

The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it was actively reconsidering the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations 2026, which were formulated to address caste-based discrimination in colleges and universities. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, made the statement before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana. Mehta sought time for the review, and the court adjourned the pleas challenging the regulations by four weeks.
