Congress chief urges PM to freeze Lok Sabha seats at 543 for 25 years, calls for all-party meet on delimitation
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposing that the Lok Sabha's strength remain at 543 seats for another 25 years and that an all-party meeting be convened on the delimitation exercise.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the government's proposed delimitation exercise. In the letter, Kharge called for the Lok Sabha's existing strength of 543 seats to be retained for another 25 years, and for the current state-wise allocation of seats to also continue for that period.
Kharge further sought implementation of one-third reservation for women from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He asked the government to share its delimitation proposals with all political parties and give parties and state governments sufficient time to study them before any introduction in Parliament.
The Congress chief noted that he had made a similar request to Modi on July 16, also seeking an all-party meeting on the matter.
