A special team of Bengal Police arrested former Panihati Municipality chairman Somnath Dey in Bengaluru early Thursday. Police allege he was involved in the hurried cremation of the RG Kar rape and murder victim and in the destruction of evidence. Dey had been absconding and was reportedly changing locations and using multiple phone numbers. An FIR was registered at Khardah police station on August 10 based on a complaint by the victim's family. His name appeared on cremation ground requisition documents. Police plan to bring him to West Bengal on transit remand, present him before a Barrackpore court, and question him at Khardah police station to probe the alleged conspiracy. The victim's family has accused Dey of misusing his position in connection with the cremation.
