Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said consultants who prepare flawed detailed project reports are responsible for road accidents and deaths on highways, and warned contractors against compromising construction quality.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that consultants involved in preparing defective detailed project reports (DPRs) are 'culprits' behind accidents and deaths on highways. Speaking at the FICCI Tunnels & Bridges Conference 2026 in the national capital, Gadkari alleged that such consultants prepare these reports using Google, causing loss of life and property. He also cautioned contractors against compromising on construction quality after winning infrastructure projects, warning of blacklisting and other action. The minister's remarks come amid reports that his ministry is preparing tunnel tenders worth Rs 2 lakh crore to Rs 2.5 lakh crore.
