The Haryana health department has intensified surveillance for seasonal influenza across the state and directed government as well as private health facilities to remain prepared for timely diagnosis and treatment, additional chief secretary for health and family welfare Dr Sumita Misra said on Wednesday.

Misra said the influenza situation was under control and being monitored through the state's surveillance mechanism. She urged people not to panic over references to H1N1 or "swine flu", saying H1N1 is now monitored and managed as part of seasonal influenza.

"Citizens should remain alert to symptoms, but there is no need for unnecessary panic. Influenza is a routinely monitored respiratory infection and timely medical consultation helps in effective management," she said.
