The Kullu administration has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that forest land in Kasol, part of the ecologically sensitive Parvati valley in Himachal Pradesh, was used to store and segregate municipal waste. According to a status report filed by the administration, the land was identified by the forest department as an interim measure after the solid waste management plant at Rangri near Manali stopped accepting garbage from Kasol in July 2024. The report said the decision was taken at a meeting of the Special Area Development Authority (SADA), Manikaran, on July 11, 2024. It stated that the waste-management contractor temporarily stored garbage there for segregation before transporting it. The administration also said a new waste system has since been set up and the forest site has been cleared.
