India lifts wheat export ban to support farmers amid low prices
India has lifted its export ban on wheat and wheat products with immediate effect, citing farmers' interests and depressed domestic prices. The decision reverses a ban imposed in 2022.
On Monday (August 24, 2026), the Indian government lifted the export ban on wheat and wheat products with immediate effect, saying the move aims to boost farmers' income amid depressed domestic prices. Notifications issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade revised the export policy for wheat from "prohibited" to "free."
The government also removed export restrictions on wheat flour and other products such as maida, semolina, and wholemeal atta. Earlier this year, it had allowed exports of 50 lakh tonnes of wheat and 10 lakh tonnes of wheat products.
India, the world's second-largest wheat producer, had banned wheat exports in May 2022 as part of measures to control rising domestic prices. The latest decision is also intended to encourage better sowing, according to the announcement.
