India opens conventional missile production to private industry
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems developed by DRDO to Indian companies for domestic production, excluding strategic and foreign-partner programmes.
The Indian government has approved the transfer of technology (ToT) for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian industry for domestic production. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh cleared the move, which the defence ministry described as an important milestone in expanding industry participation in the defence ecosystem.
The decision covers DRDO-developed systems including air-defence, air-to-air, anti-armour, and battlefield-strike missiles. Strategic and foreign-partner programmes remain outside the ambit. The ministry did not specify the individual systems covered.
The transfer allows Indian companies, including private sector firms, MSMEs, and technology partners, to produce these missile systems, subject to applicable qualifications, certifications, and regulatory requirements. Officials said the initiative will help transition missile projects from development to industrial-scale production and further the Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) initiative in defence.
