Official data released on Thursday showed India's core sector grew 5.4% in July, compared with 3.2% a year earlier. Sequentially, the growth marked a slowdown from an upwardly revised figure of 6% in June. The new series, with a revised base year of 2022-23 launched last month, covers nine infrastructure industries.
While infrastructure output decelerated compared with June, it showed resilience in July. Energy-dominant industries, barring coal, remained subdued, reflecting the impact of renewed hostilities in West Asia.
Cement output accelerated 13.1% during July, reflecting sustained capital expenditure push by the government. Electricity generation decelerated but remained resilient at 9%, supported by a sustained heat wave and low monsoon rainfall.
