India's official statistical machinery is expected to include data on digital and platform-based workers in the upcoming annual Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2026, marking a first for the country. An official said the data on digital platform workers—a subset of gig workers—is being collected on an experimental basis among workers already classified in the existing PLFS framework as self-employed, regular wage/salaried, or casual workers. All such workers will remain in the broader self-employed category.
The survey results, expected in March 2027, are anticipated to provide the maiden official estimate of the number of people working in roles such as food delivery executives. This initiative will help policymakers assess the true scope and nature of India's fast-growing gig workforce.
