The Cauvery Water Management Authority upheld a directive requiring Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, despite severe drought in over 125 Karnataka taluks. Karnataka called the order absurd and plans to challenge it in the Supreme Court.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has upheld the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee's (CWRC) directive ordering Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days. Karnataka's appeal against the directive was rejected at a CWMA meeting in Delhi. Water resources minister N Chaluvarayaswamy described the order as 'absurd' and said the government was seriously considering moving the Supreme Court against it. Tamil Nadu had sought 17,000 cusecs, while inflows into the Cauvery basin have declined considerably over the past week. The state is facing severe drought, with over 125 taluks affected.
