Kolkata issues closure notices to 200 hotels after deadly lodge fire
Kolkata civic authorities have sent 200 closure notices to hotels and guest houses in six days for fire-safety and building violations, following a fire that killed nine people at a Free School Street lodge. Several other hotels have voluntarily suspended operations.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has issued 200 closure notices in the past six days to hotels and guest houses in the city for breaching fire-safety norms or building rules. The action comes before a preliminary list is scheduled to be submitted to KMC administrator and municipal commissioner Smita Pandey. The drive follows a devastating fire at a Free School Street lodge that claimed nine lives.
In addition to the notices, several lodges, guest houses, and hotels in central Kolkata have voluntarily suspended operations, fearing sudden closure orders from KMC and the state fire department during an ongoing safety audit. Hotels in and around New Market have stopped taking bookings to avoid having to ask guests to leave at short notice.
