Manipur civil society groups urge postponing Census until tripartite talks on NRC, citizenship
Manipur civil society organisations have asked the Union Home Ministry to postpone Census activities and first hold tripartite talks involving the Centre, the Manipur government and community representatives on concerns over a National Register of Citizens-type mechanism and citizenship issues.
A delegation of Manipur civil society organisations (CSOs) has urged the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to convene tripartite talks before proceeding with the Census. The CSOs argue that citizenship-related concerns, especially around a possible National Register of Citizens (NRC)-type mechanism in Manipur, must be addressed first to ensure the Census exercise is accepted across the state.
The 14-member platform has been meeting Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, BJP president Nitin Nabin, and MHA officials in Delhi over the past few days. The leaders said they want Census-related activities postponed and a dialogue process initiated on how an NRC-type mechanism would be implemented in Manipur. They declined to disclose details of the discussions.
