Manipur home minister says 306 killed in ethnic violence since May 2023
Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam told the state assembly that 306 people have died and 49 remain missing in ethnic violence that began on May 3, 2023. The violence followed a 'Tribal Solidarity March' against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said in the state assembly that 306 people have been killed and 49 are still missing in the ethnic violence that began on May 3, 2023. He was responding to a question raised by BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh on the second day of the ongoing assembly session. According to the minister, the toll and missing figures are as of August 31, 2026.
The violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribes status. Meiteis account for about 53 percent of Manipur's population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley, while tribal communities, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute the rest.
