NITI Aayog vice-chairman Ashok Lahiri said India may miss its $1 trillion export target for 2026-27 due to global uncertainties and tariff wars. He called for diversifying the export basket, states of origin, and destinations, noting that five states generate nearly 70% of shipments.
At a Bandhan Bank event in Kolkata, NITI Aayog vice-chairman Ashok Lahiri said India may miss its target of $1 trillion in exports for 2026-27 due to global uncertainties and tariff war. He said the country needs to diversify its export basket, states of origin, and export destinations. He noted that India's exports are heavily concentrated in a small group of product categories, led by engineering goods, refined petroleum, electronics, gems and jewellery, and pharmaceuticals. He also said only five states – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh – generate nearly 70% of the country's total shipments.
