The National Medical Commission has proposed allowing doctors registered with any State Medical Council to practise across India with a single Unique Identification number, without needing fresh registration in each state.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed a new registration system that would let doctors practise anywhere in India after registering once with a State Medical Council and receiving a Unique Identification (UID) number in the National Medical Register. Under the draft Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, notified on August 11, 2026, a practitioner would no longer need separate state registration or a licence to work in another state. The proposal amends the existing 2023 regulations on doctor registration and licensing. The NMC has invited objections and suggestions for 30 days from the date of notification.
