Rescuers searching for 22 missing sailors have found no trace of their Panama-flagged cargo ship after it sank in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Coast Guard said Tuesday. The vessel, MV Ocean Winner, went down Saturday approximately 276 miles (444 kilometers) from the Paradip coast in India's eastern Odisha state. It was transporting iron ore at the time.
The joint search by the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy has been complicated by exceptionally deep waters in the area. So far, search aircraft and ships have found only an oil slick and two life rafts near the vessel's last known position. The lack of wreckage has hampered efforts to determine the cause of the sinking and to decide where to focus search operations, authorities said.
