Panel chief: Simultaneous elections possible by 2029 with constitutional changes, state support
The chairman of a joint parliamentary panel examining bills for 'One Nation, One Election' said simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls could be held in 2029 if the Constitution is amended and state governments back the move.
P.P. Chaudhary, chairman of the joint parliamentary panel examining the bills for the central government's 'One Nation, One Election' initiative, said on Monday that holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections in 2029 is possible if constitutional amendments are approved and state governments support the move.
The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aim to synchronise Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, were sent to the 31-member joint committee of Parliament headed by Mr. Chaudhary, a BJP MP from Rajasthan, following the Opposition's demand for broader scrutiny. Mr. Chaudhary said that if the constitutional amendment is approved in Parliament by 2028, the rollout of simultaneous elections could begin that same year.
