Coal shortages have cut Punjab's power generation by 1,500 MW, with private thermal plants running on critically low stocks. A Central Electricity Authority report on September 4 flagged 57 coal-fired plants nationwide with critically low coal stocks.

Punjab's power generation has dropped by 1,500 MW because of a severe national coal shortage, according to a report. Reduced coal allocations and tightened supplies have affected key private-sector thermal plants at Rajpura and Talwandi Sabo, which have a combined capacity of 3,380 MW. These plants have coal stock for only five and six days, respectively. In contrast, three state-owned thermal plants in Punjab have between 13 and 29 days of stock. One plant in Haryana also has critically low coal stocks.
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) report dated September 4 identified 57 coal-fired power plants across the country with critically low coal stocks. Among these, 52 plants that use domestic coal are operating with critically low stock. Plants are classified as critical when their coal stocks fall below 25 per cent of their normative inventory.
The situation reflects a broader coal supply crunch affecting power generation in multiple states.
