Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone on Thursday for a Rs 472-crore overhaul facility at the 57-year-old Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ). The facility is designed to overhaul T-72 and T-90 battle tanks, with an annual capacity of 80 tanks. This is expected to help meet the Indian Army's requirement of approximately 230 tank overhauls per year.
Speaking at the event, Singh said battle tanks remain crucial for ground warfare despite the increasing use of drones, missiles and other advanced technologies. He described tanks as an "iron wall" on India's borders that strengthens the morale of troops. "Tanks act as a death knell for the enemy and also boost the morale of our soldiers deployed on the borders," he added.
Singh also noted that tanks, like other military equipment, require regular maintenance and overhauling, underscoring the need for the new facility.
