Retailers cap sugar purchases ahead of festive season amid supply concerns
Major Indian grocery retailers and e-commerce platforms are limiting how much sugar customers can buy ahead of Raksha Bandhan, citing reduced stock. Some stores allow only 2-3 kg per person. No stock-out has been reported so far.
Ahead of the Raksha Bandhan festival, when sugar demand typically rises, consumers are facing limits on how much sugar they can buy. Major online grocery platforms and offline retail chains have begun capping the number of sugar packs a customer can purchase, according to an executive from a leading sugar brand who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Retailers such as DMart and Reliance have restricted sugar purchases to roughly two or three kilograms per person, the executive said, adding that e-commerce companies are doing the same. While supplies are limited, there is currently no stock-out situation, the person noted. DMart and Reliance Retail declined to comment.
The closing stock for sugar season 2026, which runs from October to September, is estimated at 3.9 million metric tonnes, according to the report.
