A Sebi study of FY26 derivatives trading found proprietary traders and large institutions earned large gross profits while retail traders incurred heavy losses.
A Sebi study of futures and options (F&O) trading during FY26 showed that large institutions and proprietary traders continued to earn substantial profits, while retail traders lost heavily. Proprietary traders, including global participants operating in a trading member-proprietary capacity in India, recorded the highest gross trading profit at about Rs 44,000 crore. They were followed by foreign funds with Rs 14,000 crore, corporates with Rs 8,000 crore, mutual funds with Rs 3,000 crore, and partnership firms/LLPs with Rs 3,000 crore. The study did not provide a specific figure for total retail trading losses.
