Supreme Court advises Tamil Nadu to raise Cauvery water shortfall with CWMA
The Supreme Court on Monday advised Tamil Nadu to take its complaint about receiving less than its 'proportionate' share of Cauvery water to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). Tamil Nadu said it received some water that morning but faced a deficit the previous day.
The Supreme Court on Monday (August 24, 2026) advised the Tamil Nadu government to approach the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) regarding its claim that it was not receiving the “proportionate” quantity of Cauvery water due from Karnataka. Appearing before a bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath, senior advocate C.S. Vaidyanathan, representing Tamil Nadu, said the CWMA "is not giving directions to make up the proportionate quantity I (Tamil Nadu) must receive". Justice Nath suggested Tamil Nadu raise the issue with the CWMA itself, noting that the matter before the court concerned Karnataka's failure to release water. Vaidyanathan said that as of that morning, Tamil Nadu had received some water, though there was a deficit the previous day.
