Supreme Court allows women NEET protesters to file sexual assault complaints with probe panel
The Supreme Court has assured women protesters that they can directly approach the nodal officer of the High Powered Enquiry Committee with sexual molestation complaints against police during the NEET-UG protest crackdown on July 20.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday, August 24, 2026, assured that women protesters can directly approach the nodal officer of the High Powered Enquiry Committee (HPEC) with complaints of sexual molestation against police personnel during the crackdown on NEET-UG protests on July 20. The nodal officer of the HPEC will be a judicial officer.
The assurance came in response to an oral mentioning made by senior advocate Shobha Gupta, who said a separate and sensitive mechanism should be available for women protesters to file complaints and seek legal action against police personnel.
Chief Justice Kant said the HPEC has already been formed, and a direction has been given to take complaints involving police abuse with priority attention. The Supreme Court constituted the HPEC to address allegations related to the protests.
