The Supreme Court has urged younger generations to teach elders responsible solid waste management, saying a small number of sanitary workers cannot handle waste from 1.4 billion people.
The Supreme Court has called on Gen Z and Gen Alpha to 'educate' their elders against careless and excessive generation of everyday garbage. A bench headed by Justice S.V.N. Bhatti observed that a tiny number of sanitary workers across the country cannot be expected to deal with solid waste produced by a population of 1.4 billion. The court noted a 'general feeling' in society that 'I am entitled to generate but not to cooperate and control the impact of solid waste management at the threshold'. It said the prevailing assumption that solid waste is a problem for sanitary workers alone, while the rest remain passive generators, is neither legally correct nor practically sustainable, and is constitutionally unethical.
