Supreme Court directs Tarun Tejpal to surrender in three weeks in rape case
The Supreme Court dismissed journalist Tarun Tejpal's plea seeking exemption from surrender and ordered him to surrender within three weeks in a 2013 rape case. His appeal against the 10-year sentence will be heard after he files the surrender certificate.
The Supreme Court on August 25, 2026 dismissed journalist and former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal's plea seeking exemption from surrendering after his conviction in a 2013 rape case. A single-judge bench of Justice Alok Aradhe ordered him to surrender within three weeks, by September 22, 2026, and to file a surrender certificate before the court.
The court listed Tejpal's appeal against his conviction and sentence for hearing on September 22, subject to the filing of the surrender certificate. The State of Goa, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, argued that Tejpal should surrender before his appeal was heard. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tejpal, said the appeal ought to be listed first.
The Bombay High Court had earlier convicted and sentenced Tejpal to 10 years in prison in connection with the 2013 case. The Supreme Court's order requires him to surrender before his appeal is heard.
