Supreme Court plea seeks reconstitution of panel probing July 20 protest violence
A plea has been mentioned in the Supreme Court seeking reconstitution of the committee investigating alleged police excesses during the July 20 protest march in Delhi. The request was opposed by the Solicitor General.
A plea was mentioned in the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking reconstitution of the five-member High-Powered Expert Committee (HPEC) headed by former top court judge Justice R Subhash Reddy. The committee was set up to examine allegations of police excesses against student protesters in Delhi and violence against police personnel during the July 20 protest march organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, requesting that it be listed next week. He said the petitioners had reservations about the committee's composition.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police and the Centre, strongly opposed the plea and called it "very mischievous."
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for some of the petitioners, supported the request and said it reflected a "common concern" among the petitioners.
