The rebuilt Gambhira bridge over the Mahi river in Gujarat, which collapsed and killed 22 people, has been completed and testing has begun before it opens to traffic.
More than a year after the Gambhira bridge over the Mahi river collapsed, killing 22 people and cutting a key road link between Vadodara and Anand districts, the new bridge has been completed. The roads and buildings department has begun testing the structure ahead of its opening to traffic. The two-lane bridge, 854.5 metres long, was built at a cost of Rs 212 crore and was completed ahead of its August 13 contractual deadline, within the state government's 12-month timeframe to restore the connection. The bridge includes modern construction features such as epoxy-coated steel to reduce corrosion and improve durability, as well as precast elements that sped up construction. Inspection platforms have also been installed.
