AIADMK legislators walked out of the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, accusing the state government of inaction over the killing of a Tamil fisherman by pirates off Saudi Arabia and demanding repatriation and aid for the injured.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami led his party's legislators out of the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday after the House did not take up a special calling-attention motion on the killing of a 39-year-old fisherman by pirates off Saudi Arabia. The fisherman, identified as P Maaveeran, was from Thoduvai village in Mayiladuthurai district. He was killed in the attack on the night of August 10, and three others were injured and hospitalised, Palaniswami said.
Speaking to reporters after the walkout, Palaniswami criticised members of the ruling party for thumping their desks and laughing as his party left the House in protest. "Will anyone who genuinely cares about the welfare of Tamils behave like that?" he asked. He described the state government as a "reels govt" that shows no real concern for Tamil people. The AIADMK has demanded repatriation of the fisherman's body and aid for the injured.
