Auto unions in Tamil Nadu press for fare revision, warn of protest
Auto-rickshaw driver unions in Tamil Nadu have urged the government to announce a fare revision in the Assembly, warning of protests if it does not. Fares have not been changed since August 2013.
Auto-rickshaw fares in Tamil Nadu were last fixed in August 2013 during the AIADMK regime, at Rs 25 for the first 1.8 km and Rs 12 for every additional kilometre. With Transport Minister A Vijay Tamilan Parthiban scheduled to submit demands for grants in the Assembly on Friday, the auto drivers' union has urged the government to announce a fare revision the same day.
S Balasubramaniam, general secretary of the Auto-Taxi Workers Association (CITU), warned that auto drivers' associations will stage a protest if no announcement is made. The union has demanded a minimum fare of Rs 60 for 1.5 km, Rs 30 for every additional kilometre, a night charge of 1.5 times the normal fare, and a waiting charge of Rs 1 per minute.
Balasubramaniam said the request was submitted during a tripartite meeting chaired by the minister on July 9.
