The Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore has completed its first heart transplant, according to a press release. The recipient, a man in his 30s, first came to CMC in January after experiencing breathlessness for a couple of months. Despite treatment, his symptoms remained severe, leading to repeated hospital admissions. With limited treatment options left, doctors discussed a heart transplant with the patient and his family, and consent was obtained. The donor heart was retrieved and transported to the cardiothoracic operating theatre, where the recipient was prepared. The heart was implanted successfully, and the team saw it begin beating as soon as blood supply was restored. The patient was then taken off the bypass machine. The procedure marks a significant milestone for the hospital in advanced cardiac care.
