CMC Vellore performs its first heart transplant
The Christian Medical College in Vellore successfully completed its first heart transplant on a patient in his 30s, marking a milestone in advanced cardiac care at the institution.
The Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore has performed its first heart transplant. According to a press release, the patient, a man in his 30s, first came to CMC in January this year after experiencing breathlessness for a couple of months. Despite treatment, he continued to have severe symptoms and required repeated hospital admissions.
With limited treatment options remaining, doctors discussed heart transplantation with the patient and his family, and consent was obtained. The donor heart was explanted, retrieved, and transported to the cardiothoracic operating theatre, where the recipient had been prepared for the transplant.
The heart was successfully implanted, and the medical team saw it begin beating as soon as blood supply was restored. The procedure marks a significant step in the hospital's advanced cardiac care capabilities.
