Gyms and fitness centres in Coimbatore district have come under the scrutiny of police and the Drug Administration Department over the growing misuse of Mephentermine, a synthetic drug normally used as an emergency medicine for cardiac stimulation. According to officials, the drug is being illegally used by fitness enthusiasts to boost endurance during heavy workouts.

Officials warned that abuse of the drug can lead to adverse effects, including cardiovascular disorders, and may even prove fatal.

The issue came to light recently when Coimbatore District (Rural) police seized the drug from a gym near Mettupalayam. During the investigation, authorities found that the drug was commonly used among workout addicts. Following the seizure, the District Collector has ordered action, though details of the directive were not disclosed in the report.
