Coimbatore gyms under scrutiny over workout drug misuse
Police and drug authorities are scrutinising gyms in Coimbatore for the misuse of Mephentermine, a cardiac stimulant that can be fatal when abused.
Police and the Drug Administration Department are scrutinising gyms and fitness centres in Coimbatore district over the misuse of Mephentermine, a synthetic drug used as an emergency cardiac stimulant but illegally preferred by workout enthusiasts to boost endurance. Officials warn that abuse of the drug can result in adverse effects, including cardiovascular disorders, and may even prove fatal.
The prevalence of the drug among youngsters, particularly fitness enthusiasts, came to light recently when Coimbatore District (Rural) police seized it from a gym near Mettupalayam. During the investigation, authorities found that the drug was commonly used among workout addicts. Following the seizure, the district collector has ordered further action.
