Karnataka has refused to follow the Cauvery Water Management Authority's directive to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from September 9. Farmers in the delta region have asked the Tamil Nadu government to immediately move the Supreme Court, as inflow into the Mettur dam continues to decline.

Farmers in the Cauvery delta have urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately approach the Supreme Court after Karnataka declined to comply with the Cauvery Water Management Authority's (CWMA) order. The CWMA had directed Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days starting September 9. The farmers, based in Thanjavur, expressed concern as the inflow into the Mettur dam fell to 1,731 cusecs on Friday morning.
This year, water from the Mettur dam was released for delta irrigation only on September 1, instead of the customary date of June 12. The delay was attributed to Karnataka not releasing water as per the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT). The tribunal's final orders, as modified by the Supreme Court, had envisaged 86.4 tmcft of water for June, July, and August. However, Karnataka released only 33 tmcft against that target.
The farmers' demand for Supreme Court intervention comes amid the ongoing dispute over water sharing between the two states.
