Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board suspects sewage contamination caused fish deaths in Ennore Creek after low dissolved oxygen was found. Fishers and environmentalists are demanding a probe into possible chemical leaks.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) suspects that sewage contamination may have caused the recent mass fish death in Ennore Creek, near Chennai. Officials recorded dissolved oxygen (DO) levels below 4 mg/litre at two of five water sampling locations. Low DO can result from sewage, as microorganisms consume oxygen while breaking down organic matter. Authorities said untreated sewage intrusion into the creek could be one cause, noting that similar incidents have occurred in the past. Meanwhile, fishermen and environmentalists are calling for a separate investigation into possible chemical leaks, disputing the sewage theory.
