Forest department resolves decades-old water crisis at tribal hamlet in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve
The forest department has resolved a long-standing drinking water crisis at Velladhotti, a tribal hamlet in Erode district's Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, under the Project Elephant scheme. The department is also considering similar initiatives for nearby villages.
The forest department has resolved the drinking water crisis that had persisted for decades at Velladhotti, a tribal hamlet in the Germalam forest range of Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) in Erode district, under the 'Project Elephant' scheme.
The village, home to about 10 tribal families, previously faced severe hardship, with residents having to travel more than 2 km across difficult terrain to fetch potable water daily. A senior forest official said this issue had persisted for many decades.
A few years ago, a borewell with a tank was constructed through the local body to address the drinking water problem, but it did not have a solar facility. The official said the department is now considering implementing a similar initiative for the nearby villages of Devarnatham and Pasuvakuttai as well.
