Hay prices in Tamil Nadu have nearly doubled because of scanty rainfall and record heat, hitting livestock farmers and milk production. In Dharmapuri, hay costs about Rs 320 per 10 kg, while southern districts see around Rs 300 for the same quantity. Farmers have asked the district administration to stock hay and offer it at subsidised rates.

In Dharmapuri, hay is being sold at about Rs 320 per 10 kg, while in southern districts it is around Rs 300 for the same quantity. The increase follows a water shortage crisis caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon, according to farmers.
P Murali, a farmer from Kadathur, said milk production is the only profitable venture in Dharmapuri to help farmers get through uncertain times. He cited the lack of rainfall since last November as a reason for the shortage.
