The National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) in Tiruchy released two new banana varieties, Kaveri Thangam and Kaveri Nadan, after 15 years of research. The varieties have been distributed to 112 farmers across India, including farmers in Tamil Nadu's delta districts.

The National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) in Tiruchy released two new premium-quality banana varieties on Friday: Kaveri Thangam and Kaveri Nadan. The release followed 15 years of research and trials at the centre. Kaveri Thangam, named for its golden appearance, is described as carotene-rich and having a 15-day shelf life. Kaveri Nadan, a Pacha Nadan-type banana, was developed as a high-yielding variety. According to the centre, plants of both varieties have already been distributed to 112 farmers across major banana-growing states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and particularly to delta district farmers of Tamil Nadu. NRCB Director Dr R Selvarajan said trials were conducted across the country.
