The India Meteorological Department predicts light to moderate rain for Chennai and north coastal Tamil Nadu over the next few days, which may help reduce the current rainfall deficit. Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 40-50 kmph are possible.
Chennai and its neighbouring districts are experiencing a rainfall deficit, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a possible recovery. Light to moderate rain is expected on Sunday in the city and suburbs, with conditions continuing till Tuesday or Wednesday. V R Durai, director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, said a low-pressure area over Jharkhand may move towards north Odisha on Sunday, creating favourable conditions for wind convergence and convective rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu. It could also strengthen a weak trough along and off the Tamil Nadu coast, enhancing rainfall. Durai noted that the system was expected last week but moved in the northwest direction instead. Thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are possible during this period.
