At the 31st South Zonal Council Meeting in Mahabalipuram, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said Kerala is prepared to supply all water to Tamil Nadu from a proposed new Mullaperiyar dam, with Kerala bearing the cost and Tamil Nadu handling design, construction and location.
Kerala's Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said Kerala is ready to supply all water to Tamil Nadu from a proposed new dam at Mullaperiyar, which would replace the 130-year-old structure in Idukki district. He made the statement at the 31st South Zonal Council Meeting held at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, on August 20, 2026. Satheesan reiterated that Kerala would bear the cost of the new dam, while Tamil Nadu should take responsibility for its design, construction and location. During the conference, Satheesan also had a brief meeting with his Tamil Nadu counterpart Joseph Vijay. Additionally, he urged the Union government to annul the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment.
