The Madras High Court dismissed a PIL seeking to quash the Union Home Ministry’s circular on prioritising the national song 'Vande Mataram' at government events. The court said the petition became infructuous after the Centre issued clarifications and the Tamil Nadu government issued a government order on placing the state song first in official functions.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition that sought to quash the Ministry of Home Affairs’ January 2026 circular on prioritising the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ in government events.
The first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan said the petition had become infructuous with clarifications issued by the Centre and the state government’s government order on placing the state song, ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’, first in official functions.
The court observed: “As the grievances aired through this petition have fully been addressed by these administrative updates, no further issue remains for judicial determination. The prayer made in the petition has become infructuous.”
