Madras High Court orders release of life convict on juvenile ground
The Madras High Court ordered the release of a life convict in a 1996 rape and murder case, ruling he was a juvenile when the crime was committed. The order came on a plea filed by his cousin.
A division bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Justices Anita Sumanth and Sunder Mohan, ordered the release of a convict sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a minor girl. The bench was allowing a writ petition filed by the convict's cousin, A Suresh of Deveganapalli in Krishnagiri district.
According to the petitioner, his cousin, now aged 46, has been in prison since 2000, when he was convicted and sentenced to life by a trial court for raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl with a machete in 1996. The convict's appeal against the conviction was dismissed by the High Court in 2007.
The High Court ordered his release on the ground that he was a juvenile when the crime was committed.
