Madurai HC dismisses bail pleas of 15 accused in temple land case
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court dismissed bail and anticipatory bail petitions of 15 accused in a case involving illegal registration of 1.79 acres of land endowed to Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in Madurai.
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail and anticipatory bail petitions filed by 15 persons accused in the illegal registration of a 1.79-acre land endowed in favour of Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in Madurai.
According to the prosecution, the land belonged to Pudukkottai Rajakumarar Dakshanamoorthy Durairaja Durairani Trust and was endowed in favour of the temple in 1930 for performing religious and charitable works. It was allegedly transferred illegally in the name of nine people, including V Ramayee Ayyar of Pudukkottai, in 2016.
The transfer was later cancelled following objections. However, the accused allegedly concealed this fact and executed a power of attorney in favour of S Ilayaraja of New Vilangudi in Madurai and another person in 2021. The duo later registered a mortgage deed in the name of three persons, including Ilayaraja's wife Kavitha.
The court's order applies to all 15 accused who had sought bail or anticipatory bail in connection with the case.
