The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has asked the Tamil Nadu government to explain why vice-chancellor posts remain vacant in nearly 14 universities. The direction was issued during a hearing on a petition challenging the appointment of an officiating registrar at Madurai Kamaraj University.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently sought a response from the Tamil Nadu government on why the posts of vice-chancellors have not been filled in nearly 14 universities in the state. Justice B. Pugalendhi also asked what steps the present administration has taken to fill the posts.
The direction was issued while the court was hearing a petition filed by A. Velanganni Joseph against the appointment of S. Muthaiah as registrar (in-charge) of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU). Joseph argued that Muthaiah does not possess the required qualification and asked the court to direct Muthaiah to show under what authority he continues to hold the post.
A senior counsel representing MKU argued that Muthaiah is acting only as registrar in-charge temporarily and possesses all the required qualifications.
The judge said that although he was not inclined to entertain the petition, he expected a response from the Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department.
