G Sankar, 39, of Keela Moovarkarai near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, where he was undergoing treatment after being critically injured in an alleged shooting by “pirates” while fishing in Saudi Arabian waters on the night of August 10. His family received the news of his death through a phone call on Thursday morning.
Sankar’s daughter, S Manisa, a third-year college student, said her last phone conversation with her father felt like any other normal call they had before his trips. She later saw his face on a video call while he was in the hospital, but he did not speak.
Sankar’s death came days after P Maveeran, 40, of Thoduvai Tsunami Nagar in the same district, who was on the same boat, was killed in the shooting on the spot.
