The suspect, identified as Gopi, was the prime accused in the murder of Naresh Kumar (26) of Vadakuthu. According to police, Naresh Kumar was hacked to death on August 16 during a clash between two rival gangs in Neyveli. The clash was linked to previous enmity between Anand Raj of Neyveli and Gopi of Vadakuthu.
The Neyveli Township police registered a case against 16 people, including Gopi, and arrested 14 in connection with the murder. A police team later traced Gopi to a casuarina grove in Pulavankuppam, where he was hiding. When confronted, he allegedly attacked the police with a machete, leading officers to shoot him in the leg.
